Why Staying Positive Is Important: 8 Reasons

As we continue to move through 2021, I thought I open up about why staying positive is important. What I mean is not forget about reality and be delusional. Instead, think of negative situations in a positive manner.

For instance, I noticed walking downtown these days (in Chicago), I see more ads or banners that are upbeat. In 2020, that was not the case amid COVID-19. They were all negative- and, in my mind, pure propaganda.

I still think there’s propaganda regarding ads/messages related to COVID-19. But now that the economy has reopened in recent weeks, we’re seeing a little bit of normalcy coming back.

Why being positive is important

Although 2020 was a challenging year for most people, I noticed things are starting to change for the better. I’m still concerned about the long-term effects of the lockdowns; however, I’m glad to see that some life is coming back and making me feel optimistic. 

Witnessing the changes for the better gives me good reasons to stay upbeat and remain positive. Being positive gives me a boost to keep going and look on the bright side of things.

In this post, I will lay out eight reasons why staying positive can help a long way. During good and bad times, there are some things to keep in mind while staying on top. These include the following reasons:

1.) Makes you happier

5.) Building self-esteem

6.) Strengthen your abilities- bring better opportunities

7.) Less frustration and difficulties in life

It makes you a happier person

You’ll likely be happier if you choose to stay positive. Those who practice positivity tend to be the most satisfied people today and the most optimistic about the future.

Even if you have not achieved all of your goals, choosing to stay positive can help you stay happy for a certain amount of time.

When it comes to achieving your happiness, it’s all based on your attitude. If you choose to be negative and put yourself in a bad mood, that’s on you. If that’s the path you want to end up going on, you likely won’t find happiness down the road.

We may think that external things cause us not to be happy, but it all ends up back on you, your mindset, and the decisions you make.

Great for your mental health

When you choose to stay negative all the time, it can impact your mental health. When keeping negative thoughts to yourself, it doesn’t do you any good whatsoever. When you opt to stay positive, you’ll more likely turn those negative thoughts into positive ones.

There are many times where I had negative thoughts in my head but then turned them into positive thoughts. For example, when it comes to working a job you don’t like, all you might think about is the work’s negatives. Maybe your pay is low, or you don’t like the people you work with.

Instead, why not turn that into a positive thought- thinking along the line of “I don’t think I’m paid well, but I can work my way up and potentially raise my salary.” It’s something you can work toward in developing your career. It’ll make your situation less stressful as well.

Or if you’re satisfied with your job, you can always find a better one. Why not go across the street to find someone else? Maybe find a job that pays better and one where you’ll earn respect no matter what.

It helps you move forward from the past

Choosing to be positive helps you move forward rather than dwell on your past. Often, too many people think about what they did wrong in the past. Or they wish they could go back and do it all over again.

Unfortunately, none of us can go back into a time machine and undo our past. The past is the past, and we have to move on at some point. When reflecting on our past mistakes, we must learn from them. Use those moments as learning lessons. That way, we don’t have to repeat those mistakes later down the road.

Moving forward, staying positive while keeping your head up can help you stay focused. You don’t know what type of possibilities may open up if you choose to keep a positive attitude.

To stay motivated (keep your head up)

Staying positive is an excellent way to stay motivated. It can help push you to accomplish your goals and help you get to where you want in life. When you need to keep your head up, a little motivation can benefit from time to time.

One thing I like to do for motivation is to listen to music sometimes. Or listen to a talk or podcast by a motivational speaker. I noticed I feel better depending on the mood I’m in, and it gives a little extra push to work harder.

Although motivation may not last for that long, it can help when you need those moments for a little extra push. There’s a difference between staying motivated and being disciplined. I won’t go into details about the differences, but something to consider.

Builds self-esteem

Staying positive can help build self-esteem-based on someone’s confidence in their abilities and self-worthiness.

According to Wikipedia, self-esteem means:

“An individual’s subjective evaluation of their own worth. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself (for example, “I am unloved,” “I am worthy”) as well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame.”


Having a high level of self-esteem can be beneficial to staying upbeat. If you’re someone who believes in your worthiness, you likely have a positive outlook on life. You know who you are and that you provide value to the world.

Most people tend not to have high self-esteem. Some people do, but high levels of self-esteem help boost happiness and stay positive when needed.

Boost your chances to strengthen your abilities

Staying positive can help you remain confident in your ability to learn new things. Whatever skills you have (or want to know) may bring better options for a brighter future.

I’m all about learning new skills and building your knowledge, and it can have a positive impact on your satisfaction.

Fewer difficulties and frustrations in life

When you have a positive attitude, you’re more likely to feel less frustrated about everyday problems in life. Life comes with its challenges and difficulties, but approaching them the right way can make it feel less overwhelming.

Also, it’s less likely you’ll create new problems if you choose to stay positive. Having a negative attitude toward everyday issues may make them worse. So ditch the negativity, and opt for positivity to overcome most challenges in life.

Gain more respect from other people

When you positively show respect, it’s more likely people will treat you back the same way. There’s a natural tendency for people being around others who are problem-solvers and have a positive attitude. If you’re one of those people, you will create attractions and closeness with others.

For myself, I always follow the typical quote, “Treat others the way you want others to treat you.” It’s something that I always do when I’m interacting with others. In return, my intention is for others to treat me the same way.

It may not always turn out that way, but it’s an excellent way to establish boundaries with others. You never want to create conflict or tension with others.

But for the most part, I’ve always gotten a positive reception from people I’m surrounded with. Whether it’s at work or in public, I treat others the way I want to be treated as well.


Unfortunately, there’s plenty of negativity around the world today. That’s the reality we live in and something all of us have to deal with. However, it doesn’t always be so negative (all the time). As I mentioned earlier, being optimistic can come a long way.

The reasons I laid for staying positive have helped me during difficult times. At the moment, I’m going through some challenges that will help me become a better person. Where I’m at 5-10 years from now, I know I’ll be somewhere better than I’m at today.
