Is A Blog A Business? What You Need To Know In Today’s World

Is a blog a business? Some people think it’s the case, while others maybe not. A couple of months ago, I took an Uber back home one night and talked with the driver. We had a casual conversation, and the driver asked me about my favorite hobbies.

When I asked her the same question, she talked about her being a creative artist. She couldn’t shut up about it, and I can tell she loved her art. The problem was she wasn’t promoting her work, such as having a blog or joining a network.

Really- Is a blog a business?

Now that I think back to our conversation, I wish I could’ve encouraged to put herself out there. The driver’s talent and skills are undoubtedly worthy of monetizing the work. That’s throwing away an opportunity to turn a concept into a business. Perhaps it starts as a side hustle, but then it may turn into a full-time business 5-10 years later. The best part is it’s easier to start a blog and turn it into a business now than it was 15-20 years ago.

Blogging: A Business or Hobby?

In 2018, about 42% of people aged 18-49 in the US were reading blogs. Some people might believe blogs are not money-makers or something that won’t pay off down the road. Even some of my family members think that blogging is nothing more than a hobby. Blogging can be a hobby if it’s merely something you like to do in your spare time. But it can be a business if you want to promote your skills and talent. If you’re an excellent writer such as myself, starting a blog is the best way to spread the word about yourself.

From Concept to Source of Income

Even if it’s a favorite hobby of yours, starting a blog about it can lead to more opportunities down the road. I think of my father, who loves to fish and plays the guitar at home. Hobbies such as fishing can be a great way to share your knowledge about what it takes to be a master fisherman. I bring up my father because I think he’s a great fisherman. If he was willing to blog about fishing, I think it might open up more opportunities, such as monetizing his hobby or networking with like-minded individuals.

Investing Time

A blog can be a business if you invest the time to building it out. Anyone can start a blog within a half-hour today, but spending the time to make it a money-making machine requires hard work and effort. I believe that time is your most valuable asset in life: It can be your friend, or it can be your worst enemy if you don’t use it wisely. Without the right amount of time to invest in a blog, scaling it into a full-time business will be difficult and take much longer.

Time is why people give up

Some people will start blogs and get excited in the beginning. But after a short period, they don’t see results and may give up easily. I know a lot of people who have been in this position, and it’s too bad that they give up so early. What they don’t understand is for a blog to make significant income, it takes time and effort to get to that point. It can be months or years, which sounds too long for some people. The time required to turn a blog into a business is frustrating, but it’s well worth the rewards down the road.

Make passive income

There is plenty of noise these days about people wanting to make passive income. That’s possible with having a blog and building it out over time. If you’re willing to learn some new skills (such as marketing), you’ll likely end up making money with those valuable skills.

For instance, if you’re skilled at woodworking and know how to make videos with woodworking projects, those videos can end up being a good return on investment. If you know how to market your skills, you can reach more people and the potential for more conversions.

Passive income in affiliate marketing

I consider myself an affiliate marketer, where I promote products and services for other companies. These are businesses that I believe provide excellent value to individuals. It’s why I write reviews and help them on my website. Although I’ve been an affiliate marketer for several months, I’ve learned so much in a short time frame. Still, there is so much more work ahead in my journey.

The right mindset

I’ve talked a bit about building mindset before, along with other members on here. For me, my mindset builds around self-discipline, patience, and effort. It may be different for others, but a mentality with tolerance and values time is a winning mindset. Again, having the wrong mindset is why many people give up so easily on turning their simple concept into a business.

When I speak to family and friends, they think of my websites as hobbies. But in the back of my mind, I see them as significant assets down the road. I know these websites will help lead me to financial freedom. It’s the case for many of our members, and worth grinding it out now in exchange for the rewards later on. So yes, I believe a blog is a business if you are committed to it and have the right mindset.
