Blinkist Reviews: What is Blinkist?

If you’re not familiar with Blinkist, it’s a subscription-based service where you can download book summaries. It’s been around for several years and has grown to be a popular service. The books are mostly nonfiction, ranging from personal development, current events, and psychology. It’s great for those who don’t have sufficient time to read. Also, it’s excellent for those who may want a summary of a specific book.

Blinkist Reviews: Overview

Key features

One of the best things about Blinkist is it’s a timesaving tool for busy professionals, or for anybody who lives an “on the go” lifestyle. There are some great features that come with the reading app.

15-minute book summaries

When you download a book, you’ll get a 15-minute overview of the main takeaways. The Blinkist team will read the books, then break down the key points from the books. We know these points as “blinks.” It’s excellent for those who may not want to read a book in its entirety, or who aren’t sure if they’re going to buy the book. The idea behind Blinkist is for readers to test out a book. If you like what you see from a book, then you can decide whether to purchase it.

Audio & text formats

Blinkist books come with an audio version and text format. It’s convenient for those who commute and travel if they want to listen to a book. Or if you’re like me, listening to a book while doing chores or working out at the gym. All books are available in bite-size audio and text, which is suitable for those wanting to learn knowledge on the go.

Over 3,000 books available

Blinkist has a massive library of books that keeps growing each year. It adds around 40 titles each month in about 27 categories.

Here are some screenshots of some books that are on my list:

One account, multiple devices

Blinkist is available for download on a smartphone, tablet, desktop, and Kindle. So it’s convenient to read or listen to books on your phone while commuting. Or, if you want to use it while working on your laptop, that option is available as well. On another note, you can access it offline through the mobile app if you’re not in an area with an internet connection.

Blinkist offers its users a 7-day free trial to check out their library. For your first seven days, you get free access to over 3,000 books to read or listen in 15-minute nuggets. Once the 7-day free trial is up, you have the option to sign up for a monthly or yearly subscription. Blinkist’s premium plans include:

Premium Monthly ($15.99/month)

With the monthly plan, this fit is useful if you want to try out a short-term strategy and maybe cancel later.

Premium Yearly ($8.34/month; $99.99 billed annually)

The yearly option is the most popular choice. You can save a little dough in the long-term with it planned in place. The 7-day free trial is a good start using Blinkist.

You get access to other neat features. These features include:

  • Unlimited access to every book

  • Ability to learn hands-free with audio

  • Highlight ideas you love
  • Enjoy your library offline

  • Book summaries include what you need to know, takes out the fluff
  • The savings potential is enormous by not buying books
  • Check out books you may or may not like- if you don’t want a book, then no need to buy it
  • Time savings is a huge bonus, especially for those who don’t have a lot of time

  • With books in summary format, you don’t get the full value of a book
  • Serves more for the business community (more like executive summaries)
  • Not all books are available, such as fiction or children’s books
  • Some people believe reading/listening to books this way is a form of “cheating.”

Overall review

Rating: 9/10

In the last several years, more people are living an “on the go” lifestyle and busier than ever. With a subscription service such as Blinkist, they’ve addressed an issue that’s helped people set minimal time for learning and reading. Similar to the fast-food industry model, Blinkist serves a similar role in the education industry. What stands out the most with Blinkist is you can get access to summaries of well-known books. Many books have plenty of fluff- extra space to fill in and make a book longer), which readers don’t need. This feature comes without having to purchase a book and read it in its entirety.

Blinkist reviews- big ideas small packages

In my experience, I’ve been using Blinkist for nearly three years. I have nothing but stellar things to say about the app. I usually listen to 1-3 books on a good day, which can be between 7-21 books each week! That’s a lot of reading time, not to mention the savings in buying the books instead. In that time frame, I’ve listened to dozens of books on time management and productivity. Luckily, I’ve learned some great tips and tricks to help me become a better individual (personally and professionally).

If you wish you had more time to read, I encourage you to give Blinkist a shot. You know you need to learn more so you can continue to develop and expand your knowledge.

  1. Hello, I really want to first appreciate your effort in putting this great website together and writing this article. there are few platforms i have come across that will give you access to read listen to books with these simple conditions but the fact that i will not get the full book for the trail version is not nice

  2. Thanks for this interesting and informative review of Blinkist. Reading books was one of my great pleasures in life but with building my own business I am becoming increasing short of time and I don’t get to read nearly as much as I would like.

I recently turned to audiobooks so that I could listen to the book while travelling or in other down time but even that time is less and I often got well in to an audiobook before I realised that I wasn’t really enjoying it. I really like the idea of getting a summary of the book in the way you describe so that I can be sure that it’s actually what I want to read or listen to.

How extensive is the Blinkist library in terms of the genres available and are there both recent and older books available for customers?

    • Thanks, David.

Yes, I don’t know exactly how extensive it is for each genre. But if I had to guess, there have to be at least 100 titles for each category. I spend most of my time listening to self-improvement and personal development books, in which there are hundreds of titlles in their library.

To your second question, they do have recent and older books. They have old-time classics such as Think and Grow Rich (Napoleon Hill), and newer ones like Factfullness (2018). So plenty of selections to read and listen to at your leisure.

Thanks again for your questions and for sharing your input!

  3. Thanks for bringing my way this great device, I am a freelancer and many a times I use book summaries a lot. Over 3,000 books with the audio option will make this wonderful, the pricing of 15.99 per month will be very okay for me, but I will take advantage of the 7 days free trial

    • Of course, I’m glad you enjoyed reading this review. It’s good to know you take advantage of book summaries, especially if you do freelance work. I know freelance work can fluctuate based on my experience, so getting some reading time daily is better than none.

No pressure on which plan you like. A monthly plan is better for a lot of people. So if you want to try out the monthly option, check out the 7-day free trial if it’s the best fit for you.

      Thanks for sharing your input!

  4. Up until about a year ago, I was an avid reader. It was not uncommon to have tow or three books on the go at any one time. That all chnaged when I became involved with an online business. I have found that I just don’t get the time to read anymore, at least not books that I’ve personally chosen.

I still read plenty, as in reviews, documents and articles. This has, in essence, satisfied my reading appetite. I still miss actual books though. This would seem to be an ideal solution. Not only could I gain valuable knowledge but it would also allow me to ‘try before you buy’. There are plenty of books out there that look like they’re going to be of interest but you  never know until you’ve bought them. Blinkist would be the perfect solution.

  5. For a book lover like me who has a day job and a night job too, this is probably the perfect one for me because I would be able to learn everything that I need to learn with this. I am very eager to give this a try and see just how well it can work for me. I’m really happy about the information you shared. I’m definitely going to try the seven-day trial.

    • Thank you, Suz. I’m glad you enjoyed reading this review.

Yes, Blinkist is great in those moments of spare time you might have. If you’ve signed up already, I think you’ll enjoy what they have to offer. Those 15-minute reads/listens will be good to have on hand, especially if you’re not sure whether to purchase a book or not. I hope you get a lot out of the seven-day free trial.

Thanks again for sharing your input- much appreciated!

  6. Thank you for sharing this article on Blinkist. It was my first time hearing of the platform, but it sounds like an amazing concept. Finding the time to read can be really difficult sometimes as there is no time for yourself, only work which seems to go forever. I think this app solves that problem.

    • Of course, Beesean. I’m glad to know you enjoyed reading this post.

Yes, many people have trouble setting time to read a good book. Even for myself, I’ve struggled to find the best time to do so. An app such as Blinkist can help solve that problem.

It certainly is a time management issue, for sure. If you’re interested in checking it out, feel free to try it out and save some time.

Thank you for sharing your input- much appreciated!

  7. Great review- I have not heard of this service before. I have mixed emotions on this concept, which you covered in the pros and cons. I like the idea. however not sure I would want a book summarized for me.

It is a good idea I guess if you are not sure you want to purchase a book. I wish they had fiction books as well.  I felt like the post was very well written and thoroughly researched.

    • Thank you, Chuck. I’m glad to know you enjoyed reading this post.

You’re not the only one who has a mixed opinion on Blinkist. It can help break down the main points of a book; however, not everyone likes summaries. Some like to read books in their entirety, and that’s fine.

Then, others want to get a summary and test a book out. They want to do that before buying a book- maybe they’ll like it, or maybe not. It all depends on their interests. But you make valid points, so Blinkist may not be for everyone.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts- very much appreciated!

  8. I think what Blinkist does is a really nice thing. I mean we have our choices and we all know how tight our schedule can be. Reading book summaries is something that can help me relax for a little while before I get back to work. Some people don’t have the luxury of time, and they are willing to know some books. So Blinkist will be a good product for them. Thanks!

    • No problem, I’m glad to know you enjoyed reading this review.

Yes, for those living on a tight schedule, a product such as Blinkist can be a great solution. Book summaries can help fit time to reading and help you attain more knowledge. So Blinkist helps solve that issue for people short on time.

Thank you for sharing your input- much appreciated!

  9. I like reading and I know that I have less and less time to read nowadays. And I also like reading relevant books for my blog research but it will not allow me to have a lot done.

That is why I was thinking to get an audiobook that could use at the same time that I am writing or making the framework of my blogpost.

So, I like the price of Blinkist and I think the free trial will give me enough time to search around and see if I can find useful books for my work.

    • Thank you very much. I’m glad to know you enjoyed reading this post.

Yes, I understand what you mean by being crunched on time. I’m an avid reader myself, but getting in some reading time some days can be tricky. Whether through reading or listening to book summaries, Blinkist can help solve that issue.

I agree with you on the audiobook point. A lot of people take the time to work while listening to a good audiobook. I like the audio versions that Blinkist provides- a very nice feature as well.

I hope the free trial will work out for you. It’s worth trying out before you purchase a subscription.

Thanks again for sharing your input- much appreciated!

  10. This would honestly help me to get new content on YouTube. I am a YouTuber who produces content on books, especially their summary to save time for people. Before, I had to read before giving a review; but now, I can simply just go here and get worthy reviews for myself. It’s is really great to see- thanks!

    • Of course, DarmiMaddie. I’m glad to know you enjoyed reading this review.

Yes, I think it’s an excellent idea to do summarize book reviews through Youtube. Especially with more people turning to video content these days, it doesn’t hurt to dive into that area. So that’s very worthwhile to look into, for sure.

It’s good you found this review valuable. I surely appreciate your feedback. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts.

  11. Hello Eric,

I am very happy to have found this article, and it saved me the stress of going around the internet looking for a well-detailed summary of books before reading them. I read non-fiction a lot as it’s been one of my favorites for a long time. But there have been some bad books online, and trading a summary of these books would save you a lot of stress. Blinkist would be of so much help to me actually.

    • Thank you, ReeceMichael. I’m glad you found this review helpful.

A product such as Blinkist can help you save time and stress from reading. Although I think reading should be a daily habit, not everyone has the time to sit down to read a good book. I get it, so book summaries might be the best solution to that problem. So I’m with you on the time and stress problems. Those are excellent points to make.

Thanks again for sharing your input- very much appreciated!

  12. Hi,

From my online findings, Blinkist is a professional book summary service that allows you to understand the key insights from the world’s best non-fiction books, the best part about Blinkist is just how easy it is to use. The app is incredibly user friendly, and the book summaries are to the point and easy to read, with the free trial, you can check out the app and cancel after a few days if it isn’t for you. Blinkist is great if you are looking for a quick way to get a broad-strokes overview of a book.

    Thank you.

    • Of course, Aluko. I’m so glad you enjoyed reading this review.

You pretty much summed up Blinkist nicely. That’s exactly how I would summarize the service in a nutshell. It sounds like you have a solid understanding.

I think you may have explained it better than me. But hey, I like readers who are engaged and take interest in the content through the website.

Thank you very much for your insightful comment- it’s very much appreciated!

  13. Hello,

I love to read and learn new things so I think that this would be good to see if you would get on with a book.

Often if you are looking for something new, there can often be a number of new releases so this would be the perfect time to use Blinkist.

I will definitely share with others as I know quite a number of people who would really benefit from this.

Yes. there are people I know personally who enjoy using Blinkist. Whether it’s for reading or listening to audio versions, it can be a great way to get information while on the go. So it can be used for multiple uses and something I’ve taken advantage of.
